What is Powder coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating applied, using a spray gun, as a free-flowing, fine dry powder. It’s an environmentally friendly process giving the desired component surface a smooth, solvent free finish providing even and full coverage to the most complex of shapes. It is then cured in a temperature controlled oven to give an extremely hard wearing protective coating.

What are the Benefits of Powder Coating?

A scratch free and hard wearing corrosive resistant surface.

A longer lasting finish providing a greater resistance to chipping, scratching and fading in comparison to other finishes.

A larger range of colours, gloss levels, metallic finishes and special effects, the coatings will create aesthetic appeal whilst providing corrosion, mechanical and chemical protection.

The Clever Sciency bit!

Powder coatings are based on polymer resin systems, combined with curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers, and other additives.  These ingredients are melt mixed, cooled, and ground into a uniform powder similar to baking flour.  A process called electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) is used to achieve the application of the powder coating to a substrate.  This application method applies an electrostatic charge to the powder particles, which are then attracted to the grounded part.  After application, the parts are cured in an oven where, with the addition of heat, the coating chemically reacts to produce "long molecular chains, resulting in high cross-link density"...... Also known as "A really nice Finish"!
